Why Absence of Steering Wheel and Pedals?

Removing the steering wheel and pedals is more than a design novelty by Tesla. In an ordinary car, a driver can respond directly when an automated system encounters an unexpected situation.

However, in the Cybercab, that fallback is deliberately absent. The vehicle therefore has to perform the complete driving task itself, while passengers have no conventional means of taking control.

Tesla's official rider guide confirms that both passenger seats are usable and that the cabin does not contain a steering wheel, accelerator or brake pedal.

Tesla's Own Explanation About Its Cybercab

According to Tesla, the robotaxi Cybercab uses camera-based perception and sensors to navigate roads, intersections, highways and parking areas. Unlike some competing autonomous-vehicle developers, Tesla has pursued a system centered on cameras and neural-network processing rather than making lidar a core component of its autonomous-driving hardware.

That strategy is central to Tesla's argument that autonomous driving can eventually be scaled across a very large fleet without the cost and complexity of additional sensor hardware.

However, the technological debate is far from settled. Autonomous-driving systems must cope with pedestrians, cyclists, unusual road layouts, emergency vehicles, poor visibility, construction zones and unpredictable human behavior. A vehicle with no manual controls leaves particularly little room for human intervention once the passenger is inside.

The Competition

Competition is already intense. According to reports, other competitors like Waymo, Alphabet's autonomous-driving company, had substantially more autonomous vehicles registered in Texas than Tesla, with 988 vehicles compared with Tesla's 420 autonomous vehicles at the time of state-record count.

That means Tesla is attempting to close a substantial operational gap while simultaneously introducing a more radical vehicle design.

Elon Musk's Thought

Tesla boss, Elon Musk has argued that autonomous vehicles could eventually generate substantially more economic value when they can operate as robotaxis rather than sitting unused for much of the day. Tesla has also discussed a future in which owners could potentially place eligible vehicles into a Tesla-managed ride-hailing network.

However, the NHTSA audit adds another layer of uncertainty. The agency's examination of approximately 1,000 Cybercabs could affect how Tesla's vehicles are certified and deployed if regulators determine that additional compliance steps or explanations are necessary.
